It's been a pretty hectic few weeks since going to my first GeekUp. I've done a silly amount of venue scouting, hooked up with some new local and regional contacts and somehow managed to land a couple of guest speakers for an event that may or may not happen.
Until now. Quietly evangelising to friends and others about a local tech social gathering has finally ended. Today I delivered the following 20:20 presentation to a group of colleagues, extolling the virtues of cultivating an independent Sheffield Geekup. (Apologies now for the cheap pseudo-code faux-geekery.)
It's my first ever 20:20. The format is surprisingly daunting in some ways but curiously forgiving in others. It seems only fair to experience what I'm asking my event speakers to do. The presentation appeared to go well - my audience didn't fall asleep and there was some interesting discussion both in the Q&A that followed and after the scheduled event about format, organisation, affiliation and my motivation. I'll not go into the details now, mainly because I want to get some sleep before jetting off for 3 weeks in China tomorrow morning! And there's plenty yet to do when I get back to make sure this is successful and worthwhile.
Sheffield GeekUp will take place every first Wednesday of the month from 7 May 2008. Register your interest at the event site on Upcoming. Then go tell and bring your friends!
